Uniform Coordinator and Ways & Means

Hello band parents,

Welcome to a new school year! I would like to introduce myself and my husband: my name is Kris Bly and I am the Uniform Coordinator for this school year 2017-2018. My husband is Don Bly, who is the “Ways and Means” position this year for the Band Boosters. Amelia Bly, a sophomore trumpet player, is our daughter and this is her second year in the marching band.

Mr. Hernandez will be posting positions in the computer program, Charms, about a week before each event. For uniform fittings, I would love to have parents there to help pass out the hats, the uniforms, and check their shoes and gloves before the games, and then take the uniforms back and make sure they’re hung up correctly after the games. We would also need to pass out and take back the Hat feather plumes before and after pregame, and before and after halftime. It would be a big help to me to have parents volunteer their time with me, as it makes the process go much faster. Especially after the events, as we have almost 100 band members this year.

I will be able to be at all the events with the exception of the football game on September 15th, as I am out of town that weekend. If one person wouldn’t mind meeting with me before the 15th, so that I could have them be the booster parent in charge of uniforms for that game, it would be extremely helpful! If you’re able to do this, my phone number is 305-509-1447. Please feel free to call or text me and we can meet.

For any shows, the students are required to have clean, white socks, clean white gloves, and clean white shoes. Feel free to wash and bleach their socks and gloves after they wear them (please!), then they may store them in their red bags. Also, they’re white marching shoes clean nicely with a Mr. Clean Eraser. Feel free to make them as white as you are able to. I will have extra socks and gloves available at every show, if needed. I also have white shoe polish, white duct tape and extra shoes in case we have a shoe blowout at an inopportune time! If you or your student notices their shoes are starting to wear, tear, or break down, please let me know so I can arrange them to have a new pair. The same goes with their bag or if their gloves become too dirty or missing.

Mr. Hernandez will let me know when he needs this, but before their MPA’s, we like to wash the uniforms, so that they are bright and beautiful. I would sincerely appreciate some help with this; so, if you have a washer that does not have the inner agitator, it is just the open bowl, and would like to help wash uniforms, please let me know. It would be great to have multiple people wash a couple uniforms rather than a couple people washing multiple uniforms. They just get hung dry; they do not go into the dryer. They will, however, need ironing after the fact, specifically the creases on the pants and ends of the jacket sleeves. I have no problem if people volunteer for washing and other people volunteer for the ironing. The more, the better!

Don will be sending out an email of his own after he speaks with Mr. Hernandez, Pam, and Wendy about fundraising plans this year.

Once Mr. Hernandez gives me the go-ahead, we will order marching band show t-shirts. I will send out an email for any parent who would like to order one.

Again, welcome to the year! It proves to be a fun one!

Looking forward to working with you,

Kris Bly

President/Volunteer Coordinators

Dear Band Parents,

I am Wendy Meyer, Gracie Meyers mom, who is a senior and drum major this year. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself & also Pam Oropeza, Hunter Oropezas mom, who is a sophomore & chief quartermaster this year, as the band booster co-presidents for the 2017-2018 school year.

I would also like to graciously thank all of the parents that have volunteered for all of our band events & games thus far (there will be many more) & encourage those that have not to jump in and join the fun!! If you have yet to purchase your band parent polo shirt, you can do so at Goal Line embroidery located at 3255 Flagler Ave in Key West, they are about $20. It truly takes a strong, unified effort to help make the band run smoothly and successfully throughout the year. You are all very needed & appreciated!!

Additionally, I have linked to this email the band Band Sponsorship Form 2017-18. In an effort to assist with individual band students fair share obligation of $300.00, it is suggested that each student try to get at least 1 or up to 3 sponsors to help offset this cost & lessen the burden on parents pocketbooks.

Lastly, season football tickets are now up for sale $30.00 each, 1/2 of the sale proceeds are credited to your students account !!

If you have any questions or ideas regarding volunteering, chaperoning, fundraising, or anything band related I welcome you to contact either myself or Pam by email, text or phone.

Sincerely,

Wendy Meyer Pam Oropeza

DCI at Regal on Thursday, August 10:

*Band Camp will start at 10:00am on Friday to accommodate the DCI show on Thursday night at our local movie theater. We would love to see all band students and many parents there, see info below for what this is as most local people do not know this even exists and it is truly amazing:

*Drum Corps International’s prelim competition performances will broadcast live to our local Regal Cinema this Thursday, 8-10-17. Drum & Bugle Corps is a marching music performing medium that developed concurrently with marching bands throughout history, it is a very similar to what we do. The major difference is that there are no woodwinds, only brass, percussion, and colorguard. The activity is competitive and occurs primarily over the summer, these groups or corps travel the country performing at many different shows. They rehearse up to 12 hours per day and live together for two months over the summer, mostly sleeping on high school gym floors across America. These groups are made up of 16-21 year old members. The activity is billed as the major league or professional level of the “marching arts”. There isn’t anything quite like it and it is truly entertaining and inspirational for all who love music to experience. Regal just decided to show it here in Key West. I encourage all of our students and parents to attend. It is the closest thing to experiencing a live show that we can get here this far south. It will open your eyes to what passion for music performance can be, spread the word. It starts at 6:30pm, 6:39 for the first corps. It will last past 11:00pm, you can come later than the start time but the ticket price will be the same. Tickets can be purchased at the box office and do not have to be purchased online. More info below & link: https://www.fathomevents.com/events/dci-big-loud-live-14

Looking forward to it!

Volunteers & Food/Drink Donation Needs

Good morning,

Band Camp is going very well, this is a fast learning group! The students have been very resilient, keep staying hydrated and well fed. I’m impressed with the positive attitudes and how on-point the students are with their learning. It makes everything so much more enjoyable when they work hard and do so efficiently. A big thank you to everyone who helped with uniform fitting today and those who have provided food for our clinicians!

We will celebrate the close of the first week of camp with our annual “Lock-in” event this Friday August 4th. We will need some help and food/drink item donations for this event, nonperishable leftovers will be used next week for the end of camp BBQ Preview Performance and throughout the year for concessions at concerts and such. Please see all of our needs below and the specific items that are needed.

General food/drink donations needed, give what you can:

-Cases of bottled water.

-12-packs of can sodas.

-boxes/bags of individual serving chips and/or sweets (nonperishable, please check dates).

Bring these to the band room, place in front of the uniform storage room.

Lock-in:

Friday, August 4th: Students, please go home, shower, and change into comfortable clothing for the evening. If you are unable to travel home and back, please let us know Friday morning. Arrive back at the band room between 7:00-7:30pm for check-in. All students will remain on campus until the *12:00am* pick up time. The Lock-in ends at 12:00am and parents need to pick their child up at that time, after this very long day students should not be driving themselves home. Students will not be released earlier without parent consent.

Lock-in Volunteers needed: Chaperones and Food Servers needed 7:30pm-12:00am Link: https://www.charmsoffice.com/charms/volunteerR.asp?s=KyWstHSB&v=3126649

Another email will go out later this week or early next week concerning the Preview Show BBQ on August 11th after it is determined what areas we need volunteers in and/or food donations. There are donations that may come from local businesses which will have an effect on what we will need, please let me know if you/your business can help us with hotdogs/hamburgers and even cooking these for us.

Thank you!

Gary Hernandez
